About Me

"A day without laughter is a day wasted." -- Charlie Chaplin.

My name is Nathan Lawrence German. I am 35 years of age and the married father of one precious baby boy, Kaleb Thomas German.

Born and raised in the Bluegrass State of Kentucky, I am of Czech and Jewish descent. My ancestors came over to Ellis Island back in the early 1900's, and they spent most of their lives slaving away in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. I do now and shall forever consider Pennsylvania my Homeland.

My clown name is "Doork." I got the name from an old Jerry Lewis movie, "The Day the Clown Cried," that was never released in theaters. I'd like to believe the name has never been used before.

By full-time profession, I'm a middle school teacher (7th and 8th grades) at the Academy for Individual Excellence in Louisville, Kentucky. I have about nine years total teaching experience at every level from preschool to twelfth grade. I'm certified as a Special Education Teacher in the state of Kentucky, though it's always been my goal to relocate to the Sunshine State.

In terms of education, I have a B.S. in Liberal Studies from Excelsior College, Albany, New York; I have a Master's degree in Theological Studies from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Kentucky; and, I'm nearing completion of my Master's degree in Teaching from the University of the Cumberlands, Williamsburg, Kentucky.

Before I became a teacher, I was a commissioned officer in the United States Army Infantry and Staff Specialist branches. I earned my Airborne wings at Fort Benning, and I spent a year in the Republic of Korea assigned to an elite, no-notice, air-assault infantry battalion. Thanks to my experience in the United States military, I've trained all over the country, from Fort Lewis, Washington, to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Fort Knox, Kentucky, and even Arlington National Cemetery.

I never started out on my journey to become a clown. In fact, I actually left the Army so that I could become a medical doctor. However, as time as progressed, it's become increasingly difficult to pursue that particular "dream." I just don't have the time, energy, patience, or money to become a doctor...And my undergraduate grades don't exactly reflect that I attempted to maximize my intrinsic potential. I saw the movie "Patch Adams" with Robin Williams, and that offered me a different career path. Instead of being a doctor, I could be a healer, someone that uses humor that facilitate the healing process. The Bible says that "Laughter doeth good like a medicine," and recent scientific studies reflect the fact that humor has a healing effect. I've done a lot of research on this concept, and some of my inspirations are the members of the Dream Doctors Project over in Israel (my favorite country.)

All things considered, I'm still very new to clowning. But, in a weird way, I feel that I've spent my entire life learning how to be a clown. I few up watching "The Bozo Show" every morning before school, and clowns like Rusty Nails (in Oregon), J.P. Patches (in Seattle), and Bozo (in Chicago) have been huge inspirations to me.

I would very much like to make clowning a full-time career, if I could. I fully intend to audition for Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey "Clown College," and I hope to start spending a lot more time using my clowning talents for good. I suppose, if I had to narrow it down, my dream job would be to be a clown with the Big Apple Circus Clown Care Unit.

My hobbies include barefoot running, swimming, mountain biking, weight lifting, and mixed martial arts. My favorite place is the beach, and I love swimming in the ocean and/or with dolphins. I am an animal lover and active in a wide variety of pro-animal charities, as well as humanitarian organizations. I also spend a lot of time haunting the local public library, checking out books and DVD's. I am a huge fan of "Downton Abbey" and classical music.

If you have any tips you could give me about breaking into the wonderful world of clowning, please feel free to drop me a line and share your wisdom. I'm a sponge for knowledge, and I'm always seeking to better myself as a performer.
